It’s no secret my family is into basketball, so I am a bit excited to show you the first two books in a new series being launched this week by Aussie basketball star Patty Mills.
Mills plays in the NBA for the San Antonio Spurs, is a triple Olympian and the first (and only) Indigenous Australian to win an NBA championship.
The first two books in his Game Day series are sure to inspire young basketballers. Told in the voice of young Patty, he shares with readers how he started playing basketball – it wasn’t his first sport – and how he had to find his feet in a new team. It’s great to read about Patty’s inspiration, as well as his pride in his Indigenous culture and passion for Torres Strait Islander dancing.
The text is interspersed with sporty black and white illustrations, which help young readers relate to the story.
Patty Hits the Court and Patty and the Shadows are written by Patty Mills with Jared Thomas, illustrated by Nahum Ziersch, published by Allen & Unwin.
To celebrate the series launch, the publishers are running an amazing competition to win a trip to the USA to see Patty play. Check it out on the Allen & Unwin website.
